About The Venue

Sustainability Show 2022

Islington Business Design Centre, London

Sustainability is at the heart of what they do at the award-winning BDC. They prioritise that which is most important: their people, their community – both locally and across the industry – and the planet.

BDC Ethos

Sustainability is vital to everyone at the BDC. As an events venue, they are in a unique position of being able to reach huge numbers of people in a short space of time as they pass through the venue and they intend to use this position for good.

They are proud to be recognised for their efforts as they put their values into action. Out of the many awards they have gained at the BDC, winning the Exhibition News Corporate Social Responsibility Award in 2018 and 2019 are two that they are most proud of.

They have taken many steps in improving sustainability and more specifically our environmental impact at the BDC. For more than ten years, the venue has been carbon neutral. They send zero waste to landfill and they also use 100% renewable energy to power the building, offsetting any carbon generation they cannot avoid.

Carbon Neutral

For more than ten years, the BDC has been a carbon-neutral venue. They use only renewable energy, aim for zero waste and much more. However, it is not possible to entirely reduce their output to zero. We make up for the small amount of carbon we produce by offsetting.

They work with a Carbon Neutral Company to help them reduce their carbon emissions and calculate how much they need to offset. They then look for impactful offsetting projects that align with their values.

Currently, they support offsetting projects in developing countries around the world. They specifically look for projects that benefit the people that live there, as well as the environment. They also select projects that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

Projects they currently support include Acre Amazonian Rainforest Conservation, Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve and Guatemala Water Filtration.Carbon Neutral

BDC Environmental Targets for 22/23

Journey to Net Zero

Plans have begun to work with ecollective in setting out their journey from carbon neutral to net zero.

Electric Vehicle Charging

Promote cleaner transport methods through increasing electric charging facilities in the car park and loading bay.

Waste Reduction

They have set targets to reduce their waste and improve what is sent to be recycled or composted by at least 10% against their 2021 measurements.

Annual Reporting

They report annually on their business activities and the impact on their community, planet and people.

Energy Efficiency

Following the roll out of low energy fittings, they now turn their focus to energy efficiency, taking into account the nature of the venue’s listed status.

Environmental Policy

They love to talk about sustainability and have produced a full Environmental Policy with targets set for 2022-2023.

In a nutshell - BDC is leading the way compared to other larger venues across London.
