Award winning, limited edition, ethical textiles, a year in the making.
Following a desire to create something beautiful from top quality Yorkshire Dales wool, I began to source fleece from local farms in 2008.
This new venture has taken Laura’s Loom into the realm of production weaving, working with small manufacturers across the north of England and into the Scottish Borders to create limited edition collections of British wool throws and scarves. I oversee the entire process, each year collecting bags of fleece from a dozen farms in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria, with the occasional addition of fleece from the far-flung outposts of Knoydart and Shetland. I sort the wool in my back yard from where it is sent to Bradford for scouring. My yarn is spun in West Yorkshire, dyed in Selkirk and Langholm, woven in Langholm, and sent to cloth finishing mills in Galashiels and Huddersfield. All of the initial design and sampling is done by me, by hand, on my American Harrisville 8-shaft floor loom in my Yorkshire Dales studio.
In 2021 I added a new carbon-neutral pedal loom to my collection of looms. This British-made loom allows me to weave bespoke blankets and wider lengths of fabric in a more creative and sustainable way.
The Rawthey Blanket design was inspired by a bridge and named for a river which runs past my house.
My Hebridean Throws are woven from a blend of mountain wools mixed with soft shetland to produce a blanket full of natural tones which is soft yet hard-wearing.
Dentdale Throw, woven from 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool sourced directly from farms in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria.
Cumbrian Summer Blanket, woven in a soft but hard-wearing blend of British wools.
Overshot Blanket No. 1 woven from Cumbrian Alpaca and Yorkshire Dales wools.
